Bayan ul Quran is not only a tafsir of the Quran, but also a masterpiece of Urdu literature. Maulana Thanwi was a towering figure of Islamic revival and reawakening in South Asia in the twentieth century. He was born in 1863 in Thana Bhawan, a village in Uttar Pradesh, India. He received his religious education from Darul Uloom Deoband, where he studied under some of the leading scholars of his time, such as Maulana Muhammad Qasim Nanautwi, Maulana Rashid Ahmad Gangohi, and Maulana Mahmud al-Hasan. He also received spiritual guidance from Haji Imdadullah Muhajir Makki, a prominent Sufi shaykh of the Chishti order.
Maulana Thanwi devoted his life to teaching, writing, preaching, and reforming the Muslim society. He established a spiritual retreat (khanqah) in Thana Bhawan, where he trained thousands of disciples in the path of tasawwuf. He also founded several madrasas and schools for Islamic education. He was a prolific writer who authored over a thousand books on various topics, such as tafsir, hadith, fiqh, usul al-fiqh, tasawwuf, seerah, history, ethics, and social issues. He was also a renowned jurist who issued thousands of legal verdicts (fatawa) on various matters. He was respected and revered by Muslims of all backgrounds and schools of thought.
